Levels of client satisfaction following the application of a person-centered management approach in persons suffering with Schizophrenia

Abstract


Introduction: Person-centered planning is a holistic approach aimed at meeting the individual’s need as per his circumstances in a non-authoritarian manner. In view of the scarcity of studies examining the application of the principles of person-centered psychiatry in the south Asian region, the present study aimed to assess the success of the person-centered approach in South Asia in terms of client/family satisfaction, level of functioning and psychopathology.

Method and Objectives: This was a prospective follow-up study conducted over a six months period of clients suffering with schizophrenia at two centers. The objective was to compare the outcome of ‘person-centered management’ (PCMA) versus an ‘individualized management approach’ (IMA) in terms of client satisfaction, psychopathology and level of functioning.

Tools: The following tools were used: a semi-structured proforma for collecting socio-demographic data, the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) Questionnaire and semi-structured Client Satisfaction Questionnaire.

Result and Conclusion: This paper is part of an ongoing south Asian person-centered psychiatry project. Following the analysis of initial data, it is concluded that client/patient’s levels of satisfaction with the person-centered management approach are significantly higher than those recorded for the conventional approach.
